MY CHILDHOOD
Nothing is quite special in my childhood. Everything was the same as the other’s in my nice neighborhood. I was prone to play out with friends-swimming for a river, a game of tag, traditional games, etc. there might have been a difference of playing with toys. My parents always offered me toys of nature, or they got me to come to farm. I had attended an elementary school in 1991. When I was on the second degree, I had a time that I used to feel to be an unruly student. I went out of class and played truant with three friends of mine while other pupils were studying.
At the time all students were ordered to do voluntary work in the morning for school clean- in front and back yard of school. After finishing it, we were let take a rest and play in school playground for several minutes. For more than two hours, we did not hear a bell ring. Consequently we thought that there would be no lesson for the day. In contrast, the bell rang when all students were enthusiastically enjoying playing games. Most students immediately ran into classroom. We were waiting for our teacher, but she seemed to be late. The classroom started to be stuffier and I began thinking of going home earlier.
Soon, I hastily put all my books into my bag and ran out of classroom. It was unexpected that three of my friends followed me behind. We move stealthily and hid ourselves behind the wall of classroom. We passed through a ruined part of fence corner behind the school and then we left school. We really played truant. After all, I decided not to go home soon. I dropped by my friend’s home instead to play more while waiting for the others returning home from school. I and my friends played camping by pitching a unique pyramidal tent on a farm area behind his dwelling. I felt the nature of shade tall trees.
In the next day, I began being too upset to come to school because I really was afraid of getting punished by my teacher. So I changed direction to my friend’s home, the tent. It was beyond my expectation that I found my friends also in the tent. For a while, we seemed to forget school. We played more and more-hide and seek, climbing trees, and gardening. We also had our lunch there. At the day, we completely imitated adult-style camping. In the afternoon, I went home. It was hard to believe that I was severely scolded by my mother. In fact, my mother just knew from my teacher what I did for two days.
At the third day, my mother threatened me and said, “Don’t do it any more. If dare to do it again, you don’t need to go home!”
I told her that I was really really afraid of getting punishment from my teacher. But my mother convinced me then that it would never happen and my teacher would not be angry with me. Finally I gathered enough courage to go to school. In the classroom, my teacher continued lesson as if there was nothing happening in the past two days. Certainly I was so happy. But suddenly my name was mentioned. I was called to come forward. I felt my feet too heavy and my palms gradually getting cold. Luckily, when I came forward, my teacher smoothly advised me. She would have allowed me to sit if I told what I had done. She made me tell whatever I did two days before in front of friends. All my friends enthusiastically enjoyed my story till the end.

MY BOARDING HOUSE
In September 2007, I was registered in Unismuh as a new student. Being a new comer in Makassar, I barely knew the area at all. I should have looked for an ideal place to stay. In this case, I needed to stay nearer to Unismuh. After I got some friends to help me, a friend from the same district who had ever stayed with me when we studied in Java in the same room offered me to stay with him. His place actually is rather far from Unismuh to go on foot. It is located in Alauddin Dua. However, Unlsmuh is still accessible in a short time from house.
Early in the academic year I used to walk to the south when going back. I was shown a shortcut by my friend. It takes more or less than fifteen minutes to reach my boarding house from Unismuh. After crossing the road, we may walk till finding a blue shelter being occupied by vendors. Then we turn right and follow a winding stony alley. After passing tens meters through two curves beside a mossy long brick wall, we could feel fresh air under a yellow-bamboo cluster exactly at the corner before taking the next curve behind a new double-story house. In contrast, we will pass through a grassy path and a dump heap. On the ground, we could see dump garbage scattered around with a very bad smell as everything was piled up on it. Swinging our feet and moving away, we would hit a lot of flies flying and buzzing all around.
After several minutes walking, we are going to the next stony trail and passing by a lot of tombs on graveyards both sides of the trail. After the cemetery is a good pavement. Then we could pass along till the next curve in front of Mesjid Babul-Ikhtiar and keep walking along the pavement up to lorong 6- a white number ‘six’ in a yellow background. Around this area is my boarding house. We may turn left and watch the highest yellow building with a bamboo fence in front of it. After walking next to it,we may turn right and look at a bamboo-gate house from backside. It is exactly in front of Wisma 16, a tall house facing North with sixteen blue-door rooms. Between Wisma 16 and my boarding house is a space, which used to be a volley ball field. In rainy season, the space is full of wild green plants and often inundated a lot with turbid water.
My boarding house has nine rooms rented. Coming to backside, we might see the last two larger rooms with blue wooden windows and uncovered red-brick walls. On the left side of the rooms are banana trees and a small poultry coop. going inside, we could see an old well with a abundant water in the mid position among two bathrooms, a kitchen, and some tenant’s white rooms of 3 by 3 meters, my own room itself is inner. It is just the same as the others’. If we want to see the house front, we may go by a narrow space beside my room. Here we could see its yard with some kinds of flowers, and yellowish wall fence with swing bar gates, and also a boarding house on the opposite side-Pondok Akbar-face it.
Usually if I go to campus by the front gate, I will take another north shortcut-the better and more crowded one from Pabbentengan to Loraong Dua D. It is really confusing to come to my boarding house. Moreover, for a new comer who wants to pay a visit, he may as well have a friend knowing the area accompany him. Otherwise, it is highly likely to get lost in tortuous lane.
