TEACHER’S FATE VERSUS COUNTRY’S FUTURE

Government planning to boast education budget to 20% has greatly been expected by society. People hope the budget will be an effective solution for educational problems. With the budget it is expected that Indonesian people could receive good education. In addition, government would make quality of education, lagged far behind, a top priority. In contrast, government would not inclusively put salary of educators- teachers and lecturers. The decision sparks off strong protest from educators. They demand that government hold a comprehensive judicial review for the bill of education system (49(1)). It will verily make a sense if they go on strike for salary hike demands.

The budget hike should include educator salary; however, the most inseparable part in education system is the educators. It is just the same to say a head on the analogy of a body. In fact, prevalent escalating prices of daily necessities make them pull out more money as everything is at a price. To meet their needs at present, both basic and complementary need, they need some extras. What they got from being educators is definitely insufficient to get by. Otherwise, their ways of life are based on robbing Peter to pay Paul.

In addition, it is too hard to manage with relying on the salary in several districts of rural Indonesia as Irian Jaya , Maluku, etc. A terrible condition of the area may take their necessities more and more expensive and inaccessible. Teachers based in such an area should receive not only salary but also cost-of-living bonus. For instance, they should get standard subsidized housing. So they will not ever think about running from their duties.

Educator’s earnings when it comes to living standard is getting lower than what others get at different jobs such as sportsmen or athletes, employee, etc. their salary for months or years is not proportional with the monthly salary of an athlete. Besides, teacher’s salary is not even more than what a labor gets. Moreover, they spend most of their time in a school so that to get spare time job is too difficult. While educators have greater moral responsibilities all time to our country. On their hand are how the young generation, government, and influential people in society would be and how our country’s future.

Finally, if the 20% budget planned does not include educator’s salary, government should think about an alternative way to rise up educator’s salary. Otherwise, it is just much the same that government never makes development of national education the number one priority because of an established fact that government forgets the most important part in education, educators as power and mobilizer of education system. It is unimaginable how our country’s future is if no one wants to be en educator.
